What is a truffle
Underground Treasure of Nature
A truffle is a rare and highly prized underground fungus that grows naturally beneath the soil, usually at a depth of 20–40 centimeters. Known scientifically as a hypogeous fungus, truffles develop in a natural symbiotic relationship with the roots of specific trees such as oak, hazelnut, poplar, linden, willow, and downy oak.
How Truffles Grow in Nature?
Unlike many other fungi, truffles grow naturally in the wild and are traditionally not cultivated. While modern research and managed truffle orchards exist today, the best truffles still develop in natural environments where soil composition, climate, and tree species create the perfect ecosystem for their growth.
The Shape of a Truffle
The shape of a truffle often reflects the type of soil in which it grows. In soft, clay-rich soil, truffles tend to grow round and smooth. In harder soil with many roots, they usually develop an irregular, knobby surface. Each truffle is therefore unique, shaped by the natural conditions underground.
Truffles and a Healthy Environment
Truffles are also considered a natural indicator of environmental quality. They cannot grow in polluted areas or in soil contaminated with chemical substances such as herbicides. For this reason, forests and lands where truffles grow are often healthy, clean ecosystems with rich biodiversity. This is one of the reasons why truffle hunting in Italy, especially in regions like Piedmont, takes place in pristine natural landscapes where nature remains balanced and protected.
